Webinar: Sustainable Improvement Efforts

Health Systems Global is hosted a webinar that shared findings from the USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) project. Following the webinar, participants are able to:

  • Articulate key factors pertaining to sustainability of improvement efforts; and
  • Give examples of sustainable improvement efforts from around the world.

The USAID ASSIST project synthesized available peer reviewed and grey literature on sustainability and transition of improvement efforts to host country organs. Key sustainability factors for improvement efforts were noted. These are highlighted in a framework aimed at designing improvement efforts and exit strategies to maximize long-term sustainability. The framework is applied throughout the design, implementation, and transition to host governments strategies used in improvement efforts.

Key features of the framework include:

  • Defining and setting proper expectations for sustainability, transition, and country ownership.
  • Identifying scope of work for potential in-country stakeholders.
  • Creating shared vision which benefits all parties.
  • Co-design and co-implementation of the improvement activities, including monitoring and budgeting.
  • Learning and adapting throughout and beyond the period of implementation.

All improved efforts will be designed to include sustainable characteristics for long lasting improvements. The review and framework development were executed to evaluate fundamental steps proved to be effective in project transition.
